Up until recently, well-known Champagne houses such as Dom Perignon, Veuve Clicquot, and Laurent-Perrier largely had the U.S. market to themselves. This began to change in 1971 when a small group of Grower Champagne producers decided to band together under one unifying theme: a rigorous dedication to producing Champagne of the highest quality that was genuinely representative of the terroir in which they are sourced. The small founding group, the Club Trésors de Champagne or “Special Club,” originally consisted of twelve of the oldest family-run Champagne houses. Since its founding, the number of Special Club members has varied somewhat, with some of the original members departing the group while other grower producers have joined. Today, Special Club membership stands at 24 Grower Champagne producers drawn from all the major regions of the Champagne appellation.
