This very special offer features one of our favorite Italian producers, Paolo Scavino.
The Scavino estate is a historical winery in the Barolo region. It was founded in 1921 in Castiglione Falletto by Lorenzo Scavino and his son Paolo. The estate now manages 30 ha of vines, exclusively within 8 of the 11 communes of the Barolo appellation: Castiglione Falletto, Barolo, La Morra, Novello, Serralunga d’Alba, Verduno, Roddi and Monforte d’Alba. Enrico Scavino (the son of Paolo) ran the estate together with the daughters Enrica and Elisa, until Enrico’s passing at the age of 82 in 2024. Enrica and Elisa continue this important family legacy with a wide range of cru-specific wines that exhibit the individual styles that different sights in Barolo are capable of producing. As a result, the estate regularly finds itself classified among the top estates of the region.
We love the wines of Paolo Scavino! With classic aromas revealing notes of beautifully interwoven fresh and dried cherries, dried roses, raspberries, violets and forest floor, these wines call out for the hearty foods of Winter: Ossobuco, roasted lamb, hearty stews, mushroom risotto, or (a personal favorite) tagliatelle with beef short ribs or pork ragù. To showcase the wines of Scavino, we have put together a 3-bottle collection that features some of our favorite expressions of the estate’s wines:
2012 Paolo Scavino Barolo Cannubi
Cannubi is widely regarded as one of the oldest and most prestigious single vineyards (crus) in the Barolo zone. Scavino describes the Cannubi parcel as sitting on the “central crest of Cannubi hill” with a generally favorable aspect (southeast-ish) and relatively shallow, rocky soils that give concentration and finesse to Nebbiolo. Great notes of strawberry and cherry framed by eucalyptus and white pepper accents. Firm and vibrant, showing good equilibrium on the lingering finish. In its prime drinking window now;! Only 298 cases made.
2019 Paolo Scavino Barolo Bricco Ambrogio
This wine (with only 6,800 bottles made) is made with 100% Nebbiolo fruit from the “cru” village of Roddi. Made in the more modern, approachable style, this wine displays notes of dark cherry, dried raspberry, spice, and tilled earth. The perfect partner for roasted and braised meats.
2019 Paolo Scavino Barolo Bric del Fiasc
Bric del Fiasc is Scavino’s first single vineyard Barolo, which was first produced in 1978. It is located in Castiglione Falletto, within the Fiasco cru. On the palate you’ll find ripe red cherry, raspberry compote, blood orange, and licorice set against fine-grained tannins and refreshing acidity. Lovely, long finish. This is a perfect wine to serve alongside braised meats, roasted game, or dishes featuring mushroom or truffles.
